About 2022 Wine Country Quilt Show Featured Artist Cathy Perlmutter
My professional background is in journalism. I worked for many years as a writer and editor for women’s magazines and books, including a decade as a senior editor at Rodale Press’ Health Books and Prevention magazine.
My passion for quilting began in 1991, on an impulse visit to a quilt show in Ithaca, New York. I was thunderstruck by the magnificent quilts, so I bought a copy of Eleanor Burns’ “An Amish Quilt in a Day.” I loved Eleanor’s non-fussy approach to quilting, especially the rotary cutter and square-up ruler that ensures blocks of equal size, regardless of of whether your seams are wonky! (My seams are still wonky!)
Since then, I have tried and (usually loved almost every quilting technique there is! (Except sometimes applique.) My book about English Paper Piecing 100 star designs is scheduled for publication by Fox Chapel Publishing in 2020.
In the last two years, I published a book about English Paper Piecing polyhedrons, called: Stitch-a-hedron: English Paper Pieced Polyhedron Gifts and Accessories to Sew; and another on small stuffed animals, called Spontaneous Stuffies; Small Improvised Animals from Precuts, Scraps and Jeans.
In 2009, I published a sewing book about using quilting techniques to make caps, The Uncommon Yarmulke, Easy, Fun and Spiritually Loaded Little Jewish Hats.
I show quilts in many settings. Most recently, two of my English Paper Pieced quilts were juried in the IQA World of Beauty Show in Houston, 2019. One of those quilts was also juried into Road to California, 2019. An improvisational piece was juried into QuiltCon 2016. Two of my quilts have been selected to appear in gallery competitions in recent Studio Art Quilters Association magazines, and two of my quilts have been selected for publication in Curated Quilts magazine.
A three-dimensional denim sculpture of mine is now traveling with a SAQA Global Exhibition, titled “3D Expressions.”
My quilt and craft articles have appeared in national magazines, including Machine Quilting Unlimited, Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, and The Quilt Life.
I am a past president of the international Pomegranate Guild of Judaic Needlework, a 40-year-old organization. Among my accomplishments was arranging for a national Guild fabric challenge, with fabric designed by Alex Anderson and donated by RJR Fabrics.
