There is a rich history of friendship quilts in the United States. In the past, friendship quilts were made by several people as a gift for brides-to-be or Traditional Paper-Pieced House Blockother significant individuals/friends. Currently, our program is designed so that one member chooses a block pattern that is distributed to many others to construct. The completed blocks are returned to the designer, who then completes the quilt.

Here is how the program operates:

How do I become eligible to hand out block kits to others?

You must first complete five friendship blocks for other eligible members.

I took a block kit to make for someone. Now what?

Blocks should be completed and returned at the next business meeting, or within 60 days, unless you make prior arrangements with the member from whom you received the kit. Be sure to measure the block before you return it. Please strive to make it the size specified in the directions.

Traditional Paper-Pieced House BlockAfter you have completed five blocks for others, your name will be listed in the monthly newsletter with other eligible members. Once eligible, you may hand out up to twenty block kits of your choice. You will be obligated to repay the number of block kits you hand out, less five. For example, if you choose to hand out fifteen block kits, you must agree to make ten blocks for other eligible members. If you move before you repay your debt, it is your responsibility to maintain contact with the Friendship Block Chairperson to repay your debt.

To become eligible to have blocks made for you a second, third, fourth, etc. time, you will again need to make five blocks for others first.

I am now eligible to hand out blocks!

See the Friendship Block Chair to handout instructions and a Friendship Block Turn-In Form.

As you hand out your block kits, have members write their names and phone numbers on the Friendship Block Turn-In Form. This allows you to keep track of who has taken your kits. When all your kits have been handed out, give a copy of the form to the Friendship Block Chair for record keeping.

When members return their completed blocks to you, mark them as returned on your Turn-In Form. Remind members returning their blocks to fill out a Friendship Block Turn-In Slip and place it in the "Cow Can." You are encouraged to share completed blocks at business meetings by displaying them on the Friendship Block Display Board.

When all your blocks have been returned, again give a copy of the Turn-In From to the Friendship Block Chair.

We hope you will enjoy this program.
